Chapter 246

| heard shuffling, then my father cried out in pain before the call ended. | laughed at their antics. | envied them,

not everyone got to live forever with their mates and they seemed well on their way to doing exactly that.

| changed into my running clothes before making my way out of the house. Running never failed to bring me

peace and this morning wasn’t any different, well until...

“You're wandering out of the pack again,” Simon said toand | rolled my eyes, letting out a heavy sigh and

doing my best to increase my speed so | didn’t have to talk to him, but of course, he persisted.

“I'm sure you heardspeak.” He said once more

“And I'm pretty sure you sawignore you and try to run faster so | don’t have to talk to you.” | snapped at

him, slowing down once more.

“You can't talk tolike that Jessy.”

“I wouldn't talk to you at all if you gavethe choice.”

“Have you always been like this?” He asked and that hadpausing in my steps.

| watched him for a moment, rolling my eyes once more when | caught his glistening bare chest, his face looked

hard like it had been since | got here, but that wasn’t what caught my attention, it was the scars littered around

his body, especially when | caught a glimpse of his back. They mostly looked like whip marks but that couldn't

just be it, they were sstab marks too and it shockedhow comfortable he was with them, almost as if he

couldn't see them.

“Been like what?” | responded, meeting his eyes once more.

“Stubborn, provocative, nonchalant, cold.” He listed, causing my brows to furrow in anger. | was none of those

things and | had never been them either and he knew it.

“Yes, | guess I've always been like this,” | responded, before turning around and heading back in the direction |

had just cfrom.

There was no point in running if the purpose was to clear my mind and have a good start to my day but it was

already been polluted before any of that could happen. | was glad he didn’t run afterand although | was

tempted to turn back to see if he had continued with his running, | didn't.

Because | could still feel his stare burning into my back and as much as it madeuncomfortable it still made

my body tingle in a way that madeblush in shame.

The moment | got home, | headed straight for the shower to wash off the stench and sweat. | heard Lila

somewhere around the house bouncing with energy while she was on the phone and | chuckled, lately it had

been weird around her. After my little walk with Stephen, she had chthe next day a little cold

shouldered but | had assumed it was from whatever had happened between herself and her boyfriend but then

the next day it was all gone, almost like | had imagined it.

And since then, it had been this circle of hot and cold, and while it gavewhiplash, it didn’t giveany cause

for concern yet and so | was willing to let it go.

Once | was dressed in comfortable clothes, | made my way to the kitchen and Lila greetedwith a big smile

which | immediately returned.

“Good morning, | made pancakes. Grab a plate.”

“Looks like someone's in a good mood,” | responded while moving to pull a plate out from one of the cupboards.

“What do you mean? I'm always in a good mood!” She said tically and I chuckled.

“Of course, of course. Anyway, | was thinking of trying to find a job. Nothing extra, just you know something light

that | could do to keep myself occupied.”

“Why do you want to work? The money your dad sends you will probably buy any business in this pack, even the

biggest ones.” Lila said and | rolled my eyes.

“You heardsay that | was trying to keep myself occupied yeah?

“Oh, that makes sense. Well, as long as you mention that you don’t expect much. I think you should be able to

find something small. Most businesses are not looking to hire lately because of how tight things are but you

could try.” Lila said, stuffing her mouth full of food that most of her words were incoherent.

| thought through her words and it madethink.

“Lila, can | ask you something?” | asked and my friend raised her head from her food to look at me, whatever she

found within my eyes caused her to drop her fork and giveher complete attention.

“Of course.” She responded and | nodded, clearing my throat.

“How does Arthur keep the pack going? There has to be money coming from somewhere right? How does he

maintain this balance or stability within such a small, unrecognized, and maybe illegal pack? Even big and

recognized packs many times have to ask my father for shelp when things get too difficult for them so how

does he manage to keep going on with no backup?” | asked and Lila looked lost for a little bit and the silence

that followed almost maderegret asking the question but that was until she spoke.
